We hope you will find something of interest.

The Somerset Federation of Gardening Clubs was formed in 1984 with a view to promoting friendly gardening interests among Clubs and Societies throughout Somerset, and to provide advice and practical help with the day to day running of club affairs. Since then our membership has grown to include over 240 clubs in Somerset and adjacent counties.

The Federation is dedicated to supporting those who are enthusiastic about all aspects of horticulture.

Getting your information onto the Somerset Federation of Gardening Clubs Website

The website has recently been overhauled and updated and we hope that you like what you see. To make it YOUR website we welcome your feedback and ideas on how to make the website work for you.

The website is here for you to use - advertise your events - have a link to your website - have details of your Club programme - there are many ways to help your Club promote itself and help in getting new members.

To get information onto the website, just drop an email to webmaster@somersetfederationofgardeningclubs.org.uk giving details of what you want published. The Noticeboard is there for major events such as a Flower Show, Plant Sale or other such event. The adverts will be displayed in date order with the earliest one first. If we have a lot submitted then those a long time ahead will need to be held over until nearer the time. Posters that you are using to publicise the event would be appreciated. The Noticeboard is for member clubs only.

All items for the website can be sent in using:

Please save it as a normal page and do not send it in a web page or HTML page even if your word processor allows that.

Photographs of member’s gardens can be displayed and we have a page for these - please submit the photos separate from text and preferably as an attachment to your email. Brief details of where the garden is situated and when it was taken will help - please indicate what wording you would like to go with the photo. The photos will be changed on a regular basis.

Success in the Bridgwater Flower Show

Two of our lovely Holford ladies entered the Bridgwater flower show with tremendous success.

Elaine Falkingham got two 1st prizes for a photograph of a bee and a vase of cut herbs. Her jar of  honey and a beeswax candle were both in second place.

First time entrant Liz Guttridge, who only decided to enter two weeks earlier, scooped two silver cups as first prizes for a beautiful succulent and a colourful streptocarpus.  Not only that, she achieved three second places with her other entries. Not bad for a first timer!

Register of Speakers & Judges

All Federation Member Clubs should have received (by post) the new 2017 Register of Speakers and Judges.  The list would have been sent to the main contact, that we have recorded on our data base for your club/society.

Please be aware that the previous list (dated 2014) is now out of date and unreliable, we suggest you now destroy the old copy!

Sending to Multiple Email Addresses

Do you get annoyed when your email address is broadcast to others without your permission. Why do people list all the people they are sending an email to so half a page or more is taken up with email addresses? Not only is it breaking the Data Protection Act but makes the Email wide open for hackers, phishers etc.

The Data Protection Act states that information (email addresses) gained by a company (church/society or club) can only be used for the reason they were given and should not be passed to a third party without the express permission of the originator.

The easiest way to overcome this is to send the ‘block email’ using the bcc box. The term bcc means blind carbon copy and ensures that those receiving the email do not have the email addresses of all who the email has been sent to thereby adhering to the Data Protection Act.

Those who send out emails to multiple people have a duty of care and MUST adhere to the law. So, next time you are about to send an Email out to more than one person, make sure you are adhering to the Data Protection Act.

The Federation ALWAYS asks permission from member clubs when publicising their details and ‘contact’.
